The Edwin M. Knowles Company was established in Chester, West Virginia, but moved to Newell, West Virginia, in 1900.
The Knowles Company in later years was managed by a nephew, Fred B. Lawrence, Sr.
Efforts to find a buyer for the plant in 1962 proved futile. In 1963, Robert Boyce and a Mr. Tuck, area businessman, bought the Knowles real estate.
