St Clair Glass 1941 - : St. Clair Glass was founded in Joe and Ellen Clair's backyard. There they had a structure with a one ton glass day tank and glass furnishing equipment. This equipment was discarded from a nearby glass factory. It was there that Joe developed and practiced his ideas about glass making. In 1941, St. Clair glass production began.
Joe Rice and his skilled craftsmen have been creating designer art glass for over 20 years. He continues the rich St. Clair family tradition founded by his grandfather John “Pop” St. Clair in Elwood, Indiana. They are well schooled in old-world techniques while embracing the expanding area of contemporary glass art. St. Clair has been said to have made more paperweights than any other single factory. Elwood, Indiana, where St. Clair Glass was founded, had the right elements for making glass, including natural gas and lots of sand.
