Nathan Straus was successfully in covincing Macy's to allow the Straus firm to establish a retail china shop in Macy's department store in 1874. This was the first time marketing and sales technique had been used & eventually led to the acquisition of Macy's by the Straus family in 1896.As the demand for chinaware increased, the Straus import business grew. A distant cousin Of Lazarus Straus, Maxillian Marx was also a fellow immigrant from Otterberg, Germany. Marx gained experience as an European buyer with L Straus & Sons. Following the death of Lazarus Straus in 1896 and Max Marx in1898 the factory ownership changed. Edgar moved from Rudostadt & joined his brother Oscar & established the Oscar & Edgar Gutherz factoryTheir backstamp was known as O.&E.G. Royal Austria.Their slogan was "French Taste", French Quality at Carlsbad prices. The factory remained in business through World War I when it was sold and consolidated with several other Bohemian porcelain factories in 1918. |
