Homer Laughlin China, Shakespeare China Replacements
Shakespeare 1885 china patterns made by Homer Laughlin China in Newell, West Virginia.
Shakespeare 1885 - The Shakespeare shape was in all probability named for Homer Laughlin's younger brother who died in 1881. Mr. A Brocoff, decorator employed by the Homer Laughlin China Company, decorated most of the Shakespeare pieces. An ad that appeared for the Shakespeare shape in the August 2, 1885 issue of Crockery and Glass Journal states: "Stocked in plain white and decorated ware. Homer Laughlin being the only white ware manufacturer in East Liverpool owning a railroad siding at my works and have special facilities for safely packing full car loads in bulk which saves the usual cost of package to my wholesale customers. Catalogs, discounts, etc. furnished applicants."
