The shape was named for the Homer Laughlin's Chairman of the Board, Mr. W.E. Wells, who had resigned his position the same year. The Wells shape was exhibited for the first time on January 13, 1930 at the 50th Annual Pottery Show in the Fort Pitt and Williams Hotel in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.
