Nippon, China Replacements, Japan Fine China

Replacement China marked Nippon made in Japan from Robbins Nest.

The story begins in 1890 with the passage of the McKinley Tariff, which (among many other things) required that items exported to the United States had to be marked with the name of the country of origin.  This meant that items made in France that were to be sold on these shores had to be marked "France." Items made in England were marked "England" and items made in Japan were marked "Nippon" because that was the Japanese people´s name for their country.  This continued until the time of World War I, when the U.S. government started pressuring the various foreign governments to use a mark that was more specific.  As a result, such designations as "Made in England," "Made in France," etc. began to be used.  Japan was also asked to change its mark because no one in the U.S. knew what or where "Nippon" was.  Starting in 1921, Japanese wares started being marked either "Made in Japan" or just "Japan" and the Nippon era was over. - Click photo for list of available pieces.
