About Jo Cunningham 8/15/02

Jo Cunningham has been a student of the American pottery/dinnerware industry for thirty years. After making a pioneering study of the Jewel Tea/Autumn Leaf dinnerware, Jo self-published her first book, The Autumn Leaf Story. The Autumn Leaf Story was reprinted five times and is currently out of print. She founded and edited “the glaze” the first newspaper devoted solely to American dinnerware and pottery. In 1978, Jo founded and managed for fourteen years the first show and sale devoted only to American Pottery, Earthenware and China called the A.P.E.C. show.

The Collector’s Encyclopedia of American Dinnerware was published in 1982 and is still available from Collectors Books, Paducah, Kentucky. In 1995, The Best of Collectible Dinnerware was published by Schiffer Publications and is currently in its second edition. Jo’s interest then turned to the Homer Laughlin China Company, Newell, West Virginia, and makers of the now famous Fiestaź ware. Several trips to the Homer Laughlin China Company plant and many hours of research led to the publishing in 1998 of her first Homer Laughlin China book, Homer Laughlin, A Giant Among Dishes, 1873-1939. The Homer Laughlin China 1940s-1950s is a continuation of the Homer Laughlin China Company information and was also published by the Schiffer Publishing Company in 2000. The newest book Homer Laughlin China, An Identification Guide to Shapes and Patterns, was published by the Schiffer Publishing Company and released in May of this year. This book was co-authored by Mrs. Cunningham and Darlene Nossaman and is available from this site.

Jo Cunningham lives in Springfield, Missouri. Jo is “wife” to Wayne, “Mom” to seven grown children, “Granny” to twelve delightful grandchildren with another grandchild and a great grandchild soon to be added to the family. Jo is currently working on a new American dinnerware book that will focus on the potteries of Ohio and West Virginia.
